Scientific research and extensive global experience show that essential oils can provide excellent support in alleviating coughs and colds, among other things. Hopefully, true cold weather is still some time away, but we can already prepare for the coming season and strengthen our bodies.

Purifying Air Quality
Dry air (humidity below 35%) is thought to increase the risk of respiratory infections during winter. One of the simplest ways to raise and maintain humidity is by using your diffuser. In combination with essential oils, this can help combat airborne bacteria and fungi, leading not only to higher humidity but also to improved (purified) air quality (Yang H. et al, 2012).

If you plan to use your diffuser for this purpose, opt for essential oils with a high content of monoterpenes. Monoterpenes are hydrocarbon compounds found in various parts of plants and thus constitute a significant part of the plant's essential oil. They often contribute to the specific scent of the plant (and its essential oil) and possess strong antiviral, antibacterial, and often expectorant properties. Examples include:
  • Pine oils, such as Black Spruce, Cypress, Pine, and Siberian Fir.
  • Citrus oils, such as Grapefruit, Lemon, Neroli, Orange, and Tangerine.
Additionally, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, and Thyme are ideal oils to use due to their high 1,8-cineole content, which has been shown to have strong anti-inflammatory and mucolytic effects (Juergens U.R., 2014).
