MCT oil, extracted from coconuts, is a natural oil packed with vitamins. It is a stable oil that does not easily irritate or oxidize. MCT oil hydrates, softens, and restores the skin, making it ideal for dry, red, and irritated skin. But mature skin and skin with pimples and impurities can also benefit greatly from it.
MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglyceride. Triglyceride is a fatty acid. Medium Chain means that the fatty acids have a medium chain length. Most fats have a long chain.
MCT oil mainly consists of Caprylic Acid (M8) and Capric Acid (M10). Caprylic acid has a purifying effect, nourishes the skin, combats irritation, and acts as an antioxidant.
Both oils are extracted from coconuts, yet there is a difference between them.
MCT oil is produced through a process where medium-chain fatty acids (MCTs) are separated from long-chain fatty acids (LCTs). Coconut oil contains both MCTs and LCTs, so it contains multiple types of fatty acids.
Unlike coconut oil, MCT oil is odorless, making it suitable for use as a carrier oil. The scent of regular coconut oil can overpower the scent of essential oil. Additionally, MCT is a lighter, less greasy oil than coconut oil.
While coconut oil can sometimes be quite hard, MCT oil is liquid. Very convenient, so you don't need to heat it before use.
MCT oil is obtained through distillation. The coconut oil is melted and then slowly cooled. This process can take several hours. The oil is intentionally cooled slowly because the different types of fatty acids in the oil solidify at different temperatures. This allows the long-chain fatty acids to be removed, leaving the MCT oil.
MCT oil has very fine properties for the skin:
It helps moisturize the skin and is therefore ideal for dry skin.
Helps restore the skin and soothes irritated, flaky skin.
Helps reduce pimples and impurities.
Does not clog pores and is non-comedogenic.
Restores mature skin and helps with early wrinkles.
Want soft, radiant hair? MCT oil can also be very beneficial.
Use MCT oil as a facial cleanser; it effortlessly removes makeup and cleanses the skin thoroughly.
Use MCT oil as a conditioner to eliminate tangles.
Use as a mouthwash for fresh breath and to strengthen gums (oil pulling).
The oil is also ideal for use in various DIYs because it is liquid and odorless. Think of DIY salves, creams, or hair masks.
If desired, combine with another plant oil, such as Jojoba oil or Grapeseed oil. When combining, use 10% - 50% Jojoba oil.
