What is Citric Acid Anhydrous?

Citric Acid Anhydrous is also known as 'anhydrous Citric Acid'. This anhydrous Citric Acid has a purity of over 99% and is often used in food products.

Citric Acid is an organic acid naturally found in citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, tangerines, and limes. In lemons and limes, Citric Acid makes up about 8% of the total. But this acid is also found in other foods such as berries and some vegetables like lettuce and tomatoes.

How do you use Citric Acid Anhydrous?

As a cleaning agent

Citric acid kills bacteria and fungi, making it excellent for cleaning and disinfecting various items. It also works effectively in removing soap scum, hard water stains, limescale, and rust.

As a preservative

Citric acid is a natural antioxidant often found in soaps, conditioners, shampoos, and skin and hair care products. It is often combined with Potassium Sorbate. Together, they form a powerful preservative.

As a pH regulator

Citric acid is widely used to adjust the pH (acidity) of a formulation. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. A pH lower than 7 is acidic, a pH of 7 is neutral, and a pH higher than 7 is basic/alkaline. By adjusting the acidity, unwanted bacteria in various products can be avoided.

What is the difference between Citric Acid Monohydrate and Anhydrous?

Citric Acid Monohydrate contains water while Citric Acid Anhydrous consists of less than 0.5% water.

Citric Acid Anhydrous is therefore also known as 'anhydrous Citric Acid'. This anhydrous Citric Acid has a purity of over 99%.

Citric Acid Monohydrate has a slightly coarser texture and is more like granulated sugar. This form of Citric Acid contains a minuscule amount of water and has a purity of >98%.

Citric Acid Anhydrous is therefore slightly purer than Citric Acid Monohydrate.

And if you're looking for a fun DIY project, make your own bath bombs with citric acid and Baking soda. View the recipe here!
